Two specimens were observed by Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV) during exploratory drilling surveys for hydrocarbons at 1,883 and 2,294 m depth. The arms and tentacles of the squid are both extremely long and believed to be 4 to 8 m (13 to 26 ft) long….Bigfin squid. Herein, first observations are reported of Magnapinna squids in the Colombian Southern Caribbean. Giant squid live up to their name: the largest giant squid ever recorded by scientists was almost 43 feet (13 meters) long, and may have weighed nearly a ton.
Alternatively, they may simply use a trapping technique, waiting passively for prey, such as zooplankton, to bump into their arms (see Cephalopod intelligence). Based on analysis of videos not unlike the one captured at the Perdido site, scientists know that the adult Magnapinna observed to date range from 5 to 23 feet (1.5 to 7 meters) long, Vecchione. Scientists have speculated that bigfin squid feed by dragging their arms and tentacles along the seafloor and grabbing edible organisms from the floor. Others are impressively large, including the colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni ), which can grow to be even bigger than the giant squid, reaching 45 feet (14 meters). The sighting was a rare surprise because the team was looking for a shipwreck, not the elusive squid. During an expedition in the Gulf of Mexico, NOAA scientists used a remotely operated submarine to spot a ghostly cephalopod, known as a bigfin squid ( Magnapinna ). Some are surprisingly tiny-only about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) in length. Scientists captured it on footage 1.5 miles below the surface. The crew of the submersible Nautile encountered a long-armed squid off the coast of northern Brazil, 10☄2.91′N 40★3.43′W, at a depth of 4,735 metres (15,535 ft). The first visual record of the long-arm squid was in September 1988. The NOAA notes that the largest bigfin squid scientists have ever discovered was 21 feet long. Little is known about these enigmatic squids that. The bigfin squid, which belongs to the genus Magnapinna, has a small mantle-or body containing its organs-but exceedingly long tentacles. The squid known as a Magnapinna squid has a unique look due to the fact that it has elbows on its arms. To date, there have been fewer than 20 confirmed sightings of this deep-sea cephalopod, known as a bigfin squid (Magnapinna), and this recent sighting adds one more to the list, according to a statement from NOAA Ocean Exploration. How many Magnapinna squid sightings are there?
